Anne & I went to eat here last night with my mother, and I’m glad we finally got around to checking it out. Some of the best upscale mexican food I’ve had in quite awhile. The decor of the place was pretty nice with large wall murals and a faux courtyard in the middle of the restaurant with a curved lit ceiling painted to resemble the sky. The music was traditional mexican fare, and the lighting was a bit dim, but gave the place a nice cozy feel.
I ordered the Pescado Guerrero, one of their house specials which is “Grilled mahi mahi with shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, roasted red and poblano peppers, and sliced avocado in a white wine sauce. Served with rice and broccoli sazonado”. Anne ordered the Chile Manzanillo, another house special which is “Crab imperial stuffed in a fresh roasted poblano covered with shrimp, scallops, mushrooms and red peppers in a creamy lobster sauce. Served with rice and broccoli sazonado”. I’ll let Anne tell you how her dish was, but I’ve got to say that mine was THE BOMB. Great flavors all mingling together. Wonderful sauce, and although the scallops were a bit on the small side, you can’t really complain about the price only being $17 (most of their entrees are in the $12-18 range). Top notch stuff.
So yeah, anyone else eat here yet? I highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it out yet. Of course, it’s no replacement for some good cheap mexican chow at the dozen other great places around town, but if you want a nice place to take a date and get some good food and not spend too much money, this is your spot.

heeheehee… I forgot to post my review on it! oops! Yes, my husband and two sons went there soon after they first opened! We loved it! Actually we are planning to go back for my birthday dinner in November! My kids even loved it, and I’ll tell you my boys are the pickiest eatters this side of the Misssissippi. Anyway, I can’t remember what we had at the tie, just that there was a lot of it for a decent price. I would also highly recommend it!

My dish was covered in a lobster cream sauce and it was really good. Mexican isn’t really my favorite kind of food, but I would go back here. Also the chips and salsa they set out was good…chips were really light and crisp and tasty; not too salty.
Have fun shy!
hmm…Betsy & I ate there awhile back – roughly a year ago. Neither of us cared for it, but maybe it was what we ordered. We got pretty simple burrito/enchilada stuff, but I remember we both walked away talking about how everything just tasted like the cheese it was smothered in. Lots and lots of cheese. Maybe we’ll give it another shot though – your descriptions sound pretty tasty!
Yeah, they had some pretty standard stuff on the menu too, and I was actually going to just get fajitas last night, but instead I opted for one of the fancy pants house specials and I was not disappointed in the least! ;)
I’ve been here for lunch a couple of times. Good stuff.
I can see how it would be a good dinner date place too.
My wife and I tried this place a few months back.
I can’t remember exactly what I got – may have been the same thing Walker got. My wife’s not a seafood fan and stuck to the more “typical” mexican fare (enchiladas or something). Mine was pretty good, hers was just OK.
Seems like if you’re looking for some good Mexican seafood, Abuelo’s is a pretty good choice, but outside of that I think they’re a bit on the pricy side in comparison to the same quality of food elsewhere in town.
That’s a perfect way to sum the place up. 8)
I tried this place about a month ago with my friend Cara. We both had really good meals, remarked on the reasonable prices, and were just so glad we didn’t have to wait in a fiendishly long line! Thumbs up! :)
As a “Latinophile” myself, I was not impressed with Abuelo’s. I would advise people to go down east Morse Rd. to Stoneridge and see Mi Mexico for better value, better food. Abuelo’s is fine for comercial Mexican and still get to walk around Easton. Mi Mexico is great for value, real Mexican cooking, real Mexican people. The owners.. yes real Mexicans… the original Mi Mexico on Main St. is more of a testament to that fact, but the Morse Rd version carries it well too.
I’ve been to Mi Mexico on Morse a few times and was disappointed. I thought the cheese tasted like Velveeta and the ambiance felt like any other place. I don’t really won’t to go back. I’m an anglophile though, so who knows. Different tastes I guess. :)
I like Abuelo’s atmosphere. It is definitely a classy date spot.
