83 Gallery: Putting the Art back into Gallery Hop

By: Walker

The 83 Gallery might be a little bit off the beaten Gallery Hop path, but a visit this weekend might be worth your while. This new independent gallery attempts to capture the original spirit of Gallery Hop and focuses entirely on local “underground” art. Owners Geoff Collins, Mic Wesson, and Audra Cheek have made it their personal mission to reconnect local art enthusiasts with local artists.

Their new exhibit opens on Saturday and features the artwork of Jenn Szalkowski, Melvin A. Bennett, Jessica Rudd and Laura Weiser in addition to resident artists Geoff Collins, Audra Cheek, Heather Allen, Mic Wesson and Josh Angle. The opening runs from 6pm to 11pm, and also includes a monthly raffle for artwork prizes.

The 83 Gallery is located at 83 West First Street in the Short North.

  • I wish them luck.  Every time somebody declares the Short North overdone, I ask why retail/gallery off of High Street is virtually non-existent.  If this neighborhood is going to flourish and continue to fit a variety of identities, it needs to expand off of High down the many east/west axis.  I hope they succeed in this venture and that others follow.

  • Big +1 to that. nice to see some activity off the beaten path a bit, and even nicer to hear about a new gallery space that focuses on the locals.

Looking forward to checking this space out. If not this weekend, next month. ;)

  • There’s also ZenGenius gallery down an alley off the east side of High, next to Havana I think.

But the reason for why there aren’t many sporadic businesses is that the neighborhoods simply lack commercial structures off of High which are also close to High. Most alternatives are a good long walk from there.

  • God forbid man ever travel off the beaten path to find something new and interesting!

  • That’s exactly what we’re encouraging people to do!

  • possibly showing here next hop.

  • Cool, keep us posted! :D

  • There are plenty of commercial buildings scattered through Italian Village, although I don’t know what condition they’re in, if they are available, or how they’re priced…
