1. Because it preserves the wine – Secured in a vacuum sealed bag the system preserves the wine an average of 4-6 weeks eliminating the need to consume the wine upon opening.
2. Because it’s cost effective – At $18-$24 a box for 3 LITERS in the current economic climate, box wine is an ideal option for everyday wine consumption.
3. Beacuse it’s eco-friendly – Made with recycled materials box wines stay ‘green’ after your last sip. Tetra paks wines ( 1 liter or smaller) use less energy to make than glass bottles and if 2.4 billion liters of wine were converted to Tetra pak the environmental impact would be equal to removing 377,000 cars from the highway.
4. Because everyone’s doing it – Outside the US box wine has a strong following particularly in Australia and a 30% market share in Sweden with both France and Italy embracing the box with 70% of French wine drinkers saying that would offer box wine to guests and the Italian government offering its quality rating to box wine.
5. Because it’s good – Box winemakers like Black Box source their grapes from well established wine regions. While the finer vintages may reserved for the bottle these winemakers consider the box to be an everyday alternative.
The Crush and Mash Recession Buster Box Wine Tasting takes place tonight, Friday, January 30th from 6pm to 11pm at Dragonfly Neo-V and On The Fly. For more information, please visit DragonflyNeoV.com.

6. Because you’re still living in 1977.
;)
You had me until 4&5.
Because it may or may not be as good as anything else – http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-wine29-2009jan29,0,2126857.story
I’ve had the Black Box chardonnay, and it really wasn’t bad at all.
I’ve been drinking a few varieties from Bota Box. Not bad at all! I’ll add another reason:
#6 Portability – great for picnics, cookouts, the beach, etc.
Not that that does us any good this time of year, but someday it will be June.
I like some Three Thieves, but haven’t been able to find it in Columbus of recent.
I should also add that I don’t see any information about the Box Wine event on Dragonfly neo-v’s website at all. Which is a shame because I would like more information.
hrmm, that would be a good way to get my daily healthy glass-o-red on… Any suggestions? Who all is going to this tonight? I’m on the fence, I have to do some work later on with some powertools that don’t really play well with wine.
It should be noted that there is a far better selection of boxed wines overseas that we don’t get here..
Boxed wines there were embraced by all levels of wineries in Europe and Australia for their table wines. Here in the states it was only embraced by low cost winemakers.. Hence the bad rap for box wines in the states…
The boxes still look rough to me. Especially if the intention is to reintroduce the product. For better or worse, packaging and presentation impact how things taste. My brain is still primed to lean towards equating a better wine with a nice label, great typography and a bottle.
Oh my- sorry, just as I refuse to drink BS crap beer like PBR in a can because it is “cost effective& trendy”, I cannot give in to this madness either. If studies show someday that it is somehow greener and cheaper to live in a trailor& that everyone is doing it, I won’t follow that nonsense either. C’mon now.
Jon and SJT, give it a try

I just published a review of the eco-friendly bota box on my green product review blog, check it out.

I found it underwhelming.
Am I the only one who maybe once or twice has taken the silver ”wine bag” out of the box to wear / carry it with me for long walks through festivals? Hello? Anyone?… sigh.
So much wasted youth. I was more fun before I could afford to know better.
i give it a thumbs up for getting the job done.
Nope, that was a pretty common occurrence during my underage drinking career. My sorority didn’t allow us to drink out of bottles or cans. Me, the oh so clever, authority-hating pledge decided OK, I’ll just drink from a BAG!!! It’s tough to find a party pic of me from ’97 – ’99 without a silver bag in tow. Now I won’t touch wine with a 10 foot pole. Go figure.
MB – maybe boxed wine should be rebranded as a “Portable Wine Bladder”.
no, not at all….. it looks like a wine dispensing UFO when you take it out.
Boxed wine was very important to my high school drinking career. Since my mother would buy it fairly frequently for parties, she’d never notice that a pint or two was missing out of it since the bladder concealed how much was actually in there. So long as it was still fairly full feeling, I was in the clear and my used Aquafina bottles were full of Chardonnay.
Boxed wine will always have a spot deep in my heart.
here’s the low down on the ho down, we couldn’t get it on our website the artists are too busy or whatever, but it is on our facebook page
