This year, the 47th-annual festival debuts in the Discovery District after being displaced from the riverfront, which is being transformed into the Scioto Mile. Those involved with the festival are calling the move a “natural fit” with obvious benefits.

“I think that this year’s event will really feel like a neighborhood event, even more so than in years past,” said Emily Swartzlander, communications director for the Greater Columbus Arts Council, which sponsors the arts festival.

  • I understand the Arts Festival made a push to get more Central Ohio artists involved this year.

I know a couple folks who got in, but I’m curious if there’s a list of all 35.

  • I haven’t heard anything along those lines, but that’s great news if it’s true. I wonder if they’ll be spread out all over the place, or clustered in one spot.

Here’s the press release they issued. They mention a few names, but not a comprehensive list.

  • From the way it’s written it would assume the 35 local artists with have an exhibition and not official booth space.

  • Yeah, it does sound like special exhibitions. I remember Katie mentioning this idea when CU’ers met with her after last year’s festival to share some ideas and opinions. Glad to see something his happening to showcase local art.

I wonder if the local art will be for sale as well?

  • During the Randys set at the main stage (5-6:30 PM on Saturday) a bunch of SwingColumbus dancers will be hangin out and dancing so come see us!

From what I understand, no. It get’s complicated when you are jurying folks in (and maybe charging an entrance fee) and then allowing locals in via a different channel to also do sales.

Nonetheless, it is a great thing this. Hundreds of thousands of people go to the Arts Fest, and having locals on display for sale or not is fantastic- it also represents a real commitment to locals beyond the standard channels by the GCAC. Sure, locals can submit to the arts festival just like everyone else… but maybe it isn’t the right venue, or one’s work isn’t the kind of thing that you’d have a sufficent quantity for a weekend booth type thing… and on and on.

I’m excited to see how it turns out. Thanks, Katie et. al. This is just one example of how engaged the GCAC has been with the local goings on (I could name others) at all levels and I’m encouraged by it. I’m actually looking forward to the Arts festival this year more so than in previous years.

  • I think it’s great that the festival is going to be so close to CCAD this year. I hope they keep the festival in the Discovery District as it will create more awareness for CCAD.

Agreed. Just featuring these arts will raise awareness about what can be purchased locally. Hopefully many of the artists spend a lot of time there this weekend. I’m sure it could be quite the networking event for people who have questions about their work and may be looking to buy or commission other work outside of this show.

    +1

I hope it goes well for them there and they keep it there. I think it’s scheduled to be there for three years while the RiverFront is under construction, and they’re waiting to see how it goes before planning on moving back or not.

  • Here’s the map i obtained from their web site. I have mixed feeling about the layout. On one hand it seems very crowded, and i don’t understand where the food will be. On the other hand I am also excited it will be mostly on the CCAD campus.

Does CCAD really need more awareness?

  • sheyanicole wrote and i don’t understand where the food will be.

Not sure if you have figured it out yet, until your question I didn’t see where the food was either. Upon second look using the key at the top food has a blue cube look. The majority is by nbc 4 and the main stage. 2 or 4 others scattered, unless these are really blue circles. (which are info booths).

Can’t wait I’ll be there. Scarfing down food and droolin over the artwork. 8)

  • we are going…they are having performaces of Pinnochio in the Topiary Park, which makes this event a little more desirable to us since we will be with child.

  • columbus native wrote Does CCAD really need more awareness?

I don’t know if the school needs so much awareness, but the neighborhood certainly does in terms of non-school activities. Between CCAD, CSCC, Franklin, and Capital, the east-side of downtown is basically one big “campus” area without any sort of campus feel to it.

If the Arts Fest can get more people in that area for more reasons then perhaps we’ll start to see some long-anticipated changed on this overlooked part of downtown.

  • Now that I agree with..

I know many people that even after living in Columbus for years, still don’t know what or where CCAD is.

  • For any CU’ers looking for good parking spots I noticed that the meters on Jefferson between Broad & Long are completely wide open. Or they were as of about an hour ago, which was surprising because the fest already looked pretty well attended.

Beats paying $5 to park in the CSCC garage. ;)

We’re headed down for dinner (hooray for fried foods!) in a bit. I’m going to try to take a few photos.

During the day pay close attention to whether you have to pay at the meter or not, they ticket on that block like crazy.

  • What did you all think of the big metal moving sculptures at the corner of Long and Cleveland?! The smallest one was 25,000.00, (if I read it right) and after looking at how delicate and detailed those things are, they are worth it! *if you are rich*

  • Anne & I just got home. We decided to head over to grab a bite for dinner (first fair-food of the year! yay!) and walk around a bit. I’m glad we let the temperature drop to a nice cool 87 degrees instead of going when the sun was beating down at 93 degrees earlier.

Anyway, I’d say I enjoyed the layout of the new space much more than on the Riverfront. Everything was set up in a nice big square which minimized walking time to get from one end to the other. The crowd was a little thin when we showed up, but it filled out nicely as time went on. I’m sure it will be packed tomorrow.

I wish the local artists has more of a presence. There were two little tents set up near the Wii Fit station (hooray for Wii Fit socks) but that was about it. It’s great to have it on the streets around CCAD, but I’d like to see the college’s facilities used a bit more. We did enjoy sitting the grass on the quad to eat our food.

I took this photo when we arrived (from the top of the CSCC garage). I love having downtown more as a near-by backdrop rather than being right next to it on the Riverfront. Perhaps I’ve just grown bored of the riverfront location for every single festival. Anyway, worth swinging through this weekend.
