15-Story Boutique Hotel is Planned for Short North

By: Walker

Originally announced in 2008, it looks like Pizzuti’s Short North development plan for the “UCT Block” has been updated. It now calls for a hotel of up to 130 rooms in a building of up to 15 stories located on the west side of High Street along with a parking garage with office space above on the east side of High next to Marcella’s. Pizzuti is presenting the plan to the Italian Village commission next week. It should be interesting to see what their reaction to a 15 story building will be. This is awesome news and I hope they can move forward this time.

More information can be found in a Business First article on the development, located here.

  • Where exactly is this going to be? West side and east side of what?

  • Wow, that’s exciting. I hope they have a killer bar that would cater well to locals and hotels guests alike. I’m sure I’ve posted this before, but something like this hotel in Louisville would be great:

The vacant lots on High Street next to the now vacant East Village and next to Marcella’s. The hotel would be on the east side and the parking garage/office space would be on the west side. I guess the Victorian Village commission didn’t like the height of the hotel so now they are trying their luck with the Italian Village commission.

  • boutique hotels just rock and I love the 21C Museum hotel idea too….very cool and so appropriate for SN. Whenever I start getting salty on CMH I get on here and am instantly in love with this city again. Sooooo much vision and talent here just getting it deployed is the challenge sometimes…

It’s an awesome hotel. My GF and I went to Louisville specifically because of that hotel. It was a great experience and great value. Not to mention it exposed us to Louisville (I had never been there).

Funny enough, I called that hotel and asked to speak to the owner a few years ago. A secretary took my number and the owner did call me back. I wanted to put Columbus on this hotel operator’s radar. We spoke for nearly an hour and he shared some of their site selection criteria with me. He hadn’t been to Columbus in forever and I urged him to check out our city as it sounded like Columbus was perfectly aligned with their site selection criteria. Especially with our arts focus.

I told the owner that our city leaders would be very hospitable (ok, so I lied there) to a successful hotel operator such as him. My take away was that I would pass on his information to the appropriate leadership and help establish contact.

I did pass on the information to some city leaders (I’m not going to call out who or what), did some follow up and of course, the contact dropped into the typical city void of – not a damn thing getting done. No follow up from the city, no local courtship, no nothing.

Austin and Cincinnati are both now getting 21C Hotels. We’re getting a Hilton, which is fine. I guess Columbus leaders can’t walk and chew gum.

  • Or like the Drake Hotel in Toronto. Killer bar, killer restaurant, killer dance club….all in one. http://www.thedrakehotel.ca/

  • That place is off the charts. I had the burger there in October.. Mmmm.

  • A lot of people go to Louisville just for that hotel. If we get something similar we are going to see a lot of benefit from it. Assuming that parking garage is still on, the Short North is going to see a huge boost from this project. Please, Victorian Village Commission, grant a variance.

  • Here’s the article from Business First.

  • Sounds cool and fun, but also like a financial disaster. This is a huge, expensive project– plus a 150 rooms seems like a lot to sustain. Unless of course there’s a casino down the street.

  • When exactly is the meeting and would it help for supports to show up even if they don’t live in IV?

  • No, I don’t think it’s a financial disaster waiting to happen at all.

A good boutique hotel is a destination in and of itself in addition to just being a crash pad. If they get the restaurant and bar part of the hotel correct the whole project could be very sustainable.

  • Oh, yeah I see that the actual hotel will be in IV not VV. @Suber17, I don’t know but I would show up if so. Most of the business owners down here, that know what an impact that garage could have on our community, would probably make it as well.
And, Jon is right, as he already said lots of people go to Louisville specifically for the hotel. If done right, there is no reason to not expect the same results.

  • This is a financial boon in the making, not a disaster. Finally, the Short North will have more than just the Hampton, but this boutique and the new Hilton so that guests can take advantage of the shops and restaurants and bars and galleries by just walking out there door.

The garage alone makes this project worthwhile. That Columbus will have a Downtown boutique makes it all the better.

Really, really hoping this comes to fruition.

  • I wonder what kind of timeline they’re looking at if this passes.

  • I hope it goes quickly, but I’m sure the area commission will impose their aesthetic standards and taste level on this project and keep sending the developer back for more exterior revisions. Because they can.

  • Does anyone think this possibly foreshadows the impending casino’s arrival? Profitability on a 150 room luxhotel makes a lot more sense with an Arena District casino

  • I always stay at the Ace Hotel when I am in Portland and Seattle. Boutique hotels are just so much more interesting. http://www.acehotel.com/
