12 Columbus Meals for $12 in The Alive

By: Walker

This week in The Alive, G.A. Benton highlights 12 great meals in Columbus that cost 12 dollars or less. Many of the featured items come from Columbus Underground favorites such as El Arepazo, BonoToGo, Betty’s Food and Spirits, Pita Hut, Danny’s Deli, Starliner Diner, and The Northstar Cafe. A few of the others are a bit more off the CU radar.

Does anyone have any other favorite dishes that are missing from the list?

  • One of my faves under 12 bucks is the Rossi burger and fries. I think it’s 8.95.

    yum.

Furthermore, I nominate anything from the taco truck at 5th and Forsythe. You could get two burritos and a taco for that price.

You’d probably explode or vomit shortly after, but whatev…

  • Oooh, those are a ton of places I have yet to experience! Starliner Diner? Mmmm….

  • Just had that thai beef salad from PS Thai Tai last week, and can definitely vouch…it’s amazing.

  • Good list!

Mine would probably have the Number One on Ten from Brown Bag Deli, but Danny’s is deserving too. The Pot Roast sandwich from Tip Top and the 185 Burger are in the Pantheon as well.

Apparently I’ve got to get over to BonoTOGO. Those pies look like they can give Figlio a run for their money and it’s a lot closer!

Yes, you really need to try the Starliner. The food is the best on that side of town.

    +1

  • Are there two Starliner Diners, both in Hilliard? I’d never heard of it before and I’ll I did was Google Map it … but people here seem to be talking about a single, specific place. Is one of those map entries wrong?

Edit: I do see that one listing is unverified, and could be a typo by someone entering information …

 thanks, this line brought a chortle to my morning.

Gang Sub-Pa-Ross from Nongs Hunan Express in Grandview.

(Pineapple Cooked with (Meat of Your Choice) in Tomato, Curry Paste, and Coconut Milk) $8.95

I think chortle is my favorite word for the day.

  • El Arepazo (or the Tilapia place as we call it since we can’t pronounce the name) tops my list. Surprisingly it just slides in under $12 though. A meal and a drink there is always over $10. Way better than a $5 crappy food court or cafeteria meal downtown though, so well worth it.

I think I am going to give them a try today. :D

    ETA

    SO DELICIOUS!

  • I went today too. the place looks much bigger, the outside seating is a HUGE improvement. it was really cool with the farmers market happening at the same time. and the place was packed. I couldn’t get through on the phone to place a pick up order so I had to order there and wait, oh about 20-30 minutes. they were SOOOOO busy, it was great really. I’m happy for the place. the food is worth the wait and I am stuffed!

I’ve eaten there. No explosions. Also, no lengua or cabeza. Sad panda.

  • #1 should be Creole Kitchen. Value to price ratio is awesome.

I’d be tempted to slip it in again at #9 or #10, just to hammer the point home.

    Glad he found Bono.

The one location is on Cemetery Rd. It looks like a dive but it’s goooooood stuff! That’s the only thing I miss about Hilliard.

Just added lengua a week or so ago. This is a happy house because of our taco truck. The best avocados I’ve had in a loooong time came from the market so that’s another plus. I don’t know, I love it for very different reasons than why I love Chipotle, but I still think it’s a great asset for the neighborhood and will continue to support it :)
