Fourth of July fireworks needn’t be your only source for sparkle and shimmer this holiday weekend. Kleibacker’s Class Act: Storied Designers/Women of Note, on view through July 5 at the Columbus Museum of Art, celebrates women of influence and the elegant, painstakingly-detailed clothing they’ve worn on the world’s stage.

Charles Kleibacker, renowned fashion designer and CMA’s adjunct curator of design, said he hopes visitors realize that “clothing of a special quality – a superb fabric, a superb construction, a garment that is going to last” is art in and of itself.

Among the exhibit’s 43 garments are a two-piece Chanel suit worn by famed editrix and author Helen Gurley Brown; a short, silk chiffon evening dress worn by Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller; a Versace dress with metallic thread worn by Farrah Fawcett; and the sample for a pant-and-tunic ensemble by Isabel Toledo that First Lady Michelle Obama wore last year. (Toledo also designed the lemongrass coat and dress Obama wore on Inauguration Day.) [Read More]

Comfest Tops When it Comes to Festival Food

There’s a great article that was posted on CMHGourmand on Monday that provides look at the food offerings of Comfest. While food is often a pretty large draw for many of our local summer festivals, one thing that really sticks out about the Comfest lineup is the fact that everything is overwhelmingly local, and few traditional “fair food” items are to be found. Did anyone manage to find a new favorite food vendor at Comfest this year?

Smokin Joe’s Returns to Jazz & Ribs Festival

Joe “Smoke” Jackson has always known good barbecue. Growing up in South Carolina, his family has cooked and created barbecue dishes since he was a young child. When he decided to start up his business 14 years ago, he wanted to bring authentic barbecue to his new hometown of Columbus. He built two large Iron Barrel Grills, purchased some ribs, and never looked back. Jackson started out by setting up his grills on the Eastside, cooking for the locals and developing a buzz. Following the encouragement from his new found fans, he attempted to open up a restaurant or two, but the street kept calling him back. [Read More]

Behind The Scenes at Third and Hollywood

What started a year ago with rumors of a new Northstar location in Grandview has recently come full circle to reveal that Northstar-owners Kevin and Katy Malhame were opening a new venture called Third and Hollywood. After a quiet soft opening, they were met with a pretty critical eye both from food reviewers who had ventured in, as well as many who had not yet tried the place.

I recently sat down with Kevin to discuss their new restaurant, and give him a chance to share his thoughts on their menu, ingredients, location, and prices. [Read More]
